7 TIPS TO HELP YOU NAIL THAT NEXT BIG AUDITION!

Our first ever blog! Audition tips to help anyone at any level. Take a quick read, this may well change your perspective on auditioning.

  1. The audition panel are Rooting for you.

Walking into an audition room to see a panel of people can feel really daunting and it can be very easy to forget that they are just people. You must remind yourself that these people want you to do well; they are not hoping you fail. They want to find as many talented people as they can for their project/show. So, walk in that room and deliver your best, everyones routing for you!

  2. Be yourself.

From the moment you walk into the room, try and act as natural as you can (this can be difficult with all the nerves but it’s very important). First and foremost, audition panels look for nice people who they can see being a part of their cast; then they look to see if you’re talented. They can always see through fake smiles and over exaggerated pleasantries so, just be you, that’s all it takes.

  3. Dance calls can be fun.

Between the nerves and the eyes watching you, it can be easy to forget why you’re auditioning. You’re doing it because you love what you do and that should start from the first dance call, not once you’ve got the gig! Rather than getting caught up in the choreography and worrying about that 3rd count of 8 you can’t quite get, just try and settle into the routine and enjoy as much of it as you can. It will bring the best out in you and if you’re enjoying yourself, the panel will enjoy watching you!

  4. Performance doesn’t always mean to just smile.

From a young age we’re all told to “smile and perform!” however, these can be two very different ideas. Smiling will normally only get you so far. Performance means using your acting abilities to understand what you are singing/dancing about and then conveying that to the audience.

  5. Try and perform straight away.

Though 5th on this list, this could be the most crucial tip. Especially when learning choreography, it can be easy to fall into the trap of learning the steps first, then adding performance at the end. With everything going on in the room, it’s very difficult to sprinkle performance on at the end. What you need to do is add it to the steps as you learn the routine; make it part of the choreography so its already engrained in your body - it shouldn’t be an afterthought!

  6. Sing something you’ve sang before.

Singing calls can be unnerving. So, the last thing you want to do is sing a song you haven’t worked on or sang in front of other people before. Make sure you pick a song you know inside out and you’ve practiced it over and over in front of other people, not just on your own!

  7. Enjoy the experience.

Whether you get the gig at the end or not, enjoy the whole experience as much as you can and learn from it. Every audition is different and it will teach you something new about yourself. Make a mistake… who cares? Learn from it. Enjoy being in the room with other talented people and do your best, that’s all anyone can ask.
